Installation-Related Notes

This section outlines those issues that are related to Anaconda (the Ignalum Linux installation program) and installing Ignalum Linux 9 in general.

  • Ignalum Linux 9 now supports graphical FTP and HTTP installations by default.

Note that graphical FTP and HTTP installations increase memory requirements by approximately 64MB, due to the necessity of containing the installer image. However, if you boot the installation program from CD-ROM 1, no additional RAM will be required; instead the installer image will be mounted from the CD-ROM.

  • The firewall configuration screen in the Ignalum Linux installation program has been simplified. The previous "High", "Medium", and "No firewall" settings have been replaced by a more straightforward on/off-style control. In addition, the default firewall configuration is now stateful, making it more secure. The new design also makes it possible for users of NIS authentication, NFS, and DNS to deploy a firewall with no additional customization required (although customization by specifying port and protocol is still possible).

The firewall configuration screen also provides an interface to set up Internet Connection Sharing functionality (IPv4/v6 Masquerading/NAT). This is enabled by the use of dhcpd/radvd. By default, ICS will automatically generate the configuration files needed to run both these services. This behaviour and more can be adjusted by editing /etc/sysconfig/ipmasq and /etc/sysconfig/ipv6to4.

NOTE: This change also applies to the Security Level Configuration Tool (ignalum-config-securitylevel).

  • The authentication configuration screen in the Ignalum Linux installation program now includes more extensive Samba-LDAP configuration as well as Winbind support. There is also an option to set Kerberos5 for use in Samba for joining an ADS realm.

NOTE: This change also applies to the Authentication Configuration Tool (authconfig-gtk).

  • The network configuration screen in the Ignalum Linux installation program now includes WINS configuration. This is only useful when configuring Samba to interoperate with Windows servers/clients. If the Primary WINS field is left blank, Samba will be configured to run as a WINS server for NetBIOS name resolution.

NOTE: This change also applies to the Network Configuration Tool (ignalum-config-network).

  • JFS, XFS and Reiserfs support is now built-in to the Ignalum Linux Installer.

General Notes

This section describes post-installation issues.

  • The Security Level Configuration Tool (ignalum-config-securitylevel) has been simplified.

The Security Level Configuration Tool also provides an interface to set up Internet Connection Sharing functionality (IPv4/v6 Masquerading/NAT). This is enabled by the use of dhcpd/radvd. By default, ICS will automatically generate the configuration files needed to run both these services. This behaviour and more can be adjusted by editing /etc/sysconfig/ipmasq and /etc/sysconfig/ipv6to4.

NOTE: This change also affects the Ignalum Linux installation program.

  • The Authentication Configuration Tool (authconfig-gtk) now includes more extensive Samba-LDAP configuration as well as Winbind support. There is also an option to set Kerberos5 for use in Samba for joining an ADS realm.

NOTE: This change also affects the Ignalum Linux installation program.

  • The Network Configuration Tool (ignalum-config-network) now includes WINS configuration. This is only useful when configuring Samba to interoperate with Windows servers/clients. If the Primary WINS field is left blank, Samba will be configured to run as a WINS server for NetBIOS name resolution.

NOTE: This change also affects the Ignalum Linux installation program.

NOTE: Issues resulting from PEERDNS being inappropriately disabled by redhat-config-network is fixed in the ignalum-config-network tool.

  • The Samba Configuration Tool (ignalum-config-samba) now includes a dialog window for joining a domain as well as one for implanting your winbind credentials used by winbindd during session set-up to a domain controller.

NOTE: This tool can also be launched from the Firstboot utility (firstboot) under the "User Account" setup module.

  • Samba smb.conf changes:

           Parameter Name Action
           -------------- ------
           default groupmap domain admins New
           default groupmap domain users New
           default groupmap domain guests New
           default groupmap administrators New
           default groupmap users New
           default groupmap guests New
           default groupmap power users New
           default groupmap account operators	New
           default groupmap system operators	New
           default groupmap print operators New
           default groupmap backup operators	New
           default groupmap replicators New
           ldap add dn New

    - ldap add dn – used to migrate user accounts, groups, and computer accounts created with the passwd/smbpasswd or 'net user add' command to the Samba-LDAP database server on the fly. On user/password creation, Samba will automatically create posixAccount and shadowAccount objectclasses and attributes for the user.

  • Ignalum Linux 9 now includes the Nvidia Accelerated Linux Driver Set. Please refer to the documentation provided in /usr/share/doc/nvidia-glx-*/ for more information.

  • Ignalum Linux 9 includes IPv6 support out of the box and is now switched on by default during the post installation phase of the installer. IPv6 support can be disabled by editing the file /etc/sysconfig/network and removing the following two lines:

    NETWORKING_IPV6=yes

    IPV6INIT=yes

Please refer to the documentation relating to IPv6 support provided in /usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/.

  • The LDAP Directory Manager (directory_administrator) now shipped with Ignalum Linux includes built-in Samba3 support.

  • Ignalum Linux 9 now includes the Macromedia Flash Player, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Sun Java(tm) 2 Runtime Environment including plug-ins for the Mozilla web browser.

  • aeEngine Demo-Related Notes – The aeEngine-TestSdl package includes the source code + precompiled binary of the TestSdl demo. This demo installs to /usr/src/AE/TestSdl and makes use of the various plugins found within the `Plugins' directory. However both the FreeImagePlugin and DevILPlugin included with TestSdl cannot be loaded simultaneously. This means for TestSdl to work properly, you can only have one of them stored in the plugins directory at any one time (either FreeImagePlugin or DevILPlugin; the latter is preferred though).

    To run the demo:

    1. `cd' into the /usr/src/AE/TestSdl directory.

    2. Type `make' to compile the package.

    3. Type `./run.sh' to execute the demo.

NOTE: Your video card must support vertex buffers, otherwise you’ll receive the following runtime error:

TestSdl: glprocs.c:12352: InitGenBuffersARB: Assertion `0' failed.
           ./run.sh: line 4: 4002 Aborted ./TestSdl

  • The Firstboot utility (firstboot) now has the ability to create LDAP accounts for Samba. An LDAP user account is created via the User Account module which will launch a dialog window for doing this only if an LDAP server is found. In order for this to work you must enable LDAP by first clicking the Use Network Login button which will launch the Authentication Configuration Tool (authconfig-gtk). You can use this tool to configure LDAP authentication.

  • Ignalum Linux 9.2 now includes the ATI proprietary driver for ATI Radeon graphic cards. Please refer to the documentation provided in /usr/share/doc/ati-fglrx-*/ for more information.

  • Ignalum Linux 9.2 now includes the NVIDIA Linux drivers for nForce chipsets. Please refer to the documentation provided in /usr/share/doc/nvidia-nforce-*/ for more information.
